To read the various PDF reports and documents (such as invoices) that Saasu creates, you will also need to install the free Acrobat Reader application and browser plug-in. You do not require a PDF writer.

If my operating system/browser isn’t listed, can I still use Saasu?

The table above lists all the supported browsers. Saasu may still work just fine on a different browser or operating system than those listed above, but we cannot offer support for problems that are found to be related to the browser or operating system you are using.

Why don’t you support old versions of Windows or Apple operating systems?

We channel our efforts into current browsers and improving Saasu so we decided to only support operating systems that are supported by the manufacturer.

Which browser do you recommend?

Choosing a browser is largely a personal/subjective thing. There are many features that each browser offers that may make it better for you to use. However, we do recommend the latest version of Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox for Windows, and Safari or Mozilla Firefox for Mac OS X. Mozilla Firefox is recommended for Linux.

Saasu is already used for POS by customers, despite the POS module not being launched formally. There are a couple of ways that Saasu can be used for POS.

Using a USB Barcode Reader

You could use a USB barcode reader plugged into your PC with Saasu. This enables you to generate item invoices for items that have been set up in the inventory.

The barcode of the particular item will first have to be set up as the Item Code for that item in Saasu inventory. The simplest way to do this is to scan each item’s barcode and set them up in spreadsheet (CSV) format, to match the Saasu Inventory Items import format. You can then import this list into your Saasu file.

Alternatively, you can go to the Add Inventory Itemscreen, scan the barcode into the Item Code field, fill in the necessary details, and save the item.

Once the inventory items are set up properly, select Settings > Item Lists and set Item auto-complete to Code.

Now you can start entering item invoices in Saasu using the barcode scanner. When you want to scan an item’s barcode, position the cursor in the Item Codefield of the invoice and scan the barcode. The item code will show up in the Item Code field, along with the related details.

Using Saasu Web Services API

You could also use the Saasu Web Services API to make your current POS system communicate with Saasu.

Saasu plug-in partners have already built connectors to Saasu to integrate with third-party software. Find out more about connectors and the api.

Hardware

Your computer is like your car in that it is good practice to keep it tuned up – You will be safer and more efficient for doing so. So keep your personal computer up to date with security patches, the latest versions of operating systems, and updates from the people who make it. If your system is not up to date, it is often not operating optimally in terms of performance and security.

Demanding users such as large businesses simply have more information to manage (eg employees, invoices, payroll, inventory items). Users like this will benefit from more memory on their PCs. We recommend at least 1-2GB of RAM and even more for regular or heavy users (and those with other software being actively used at the same time as our products). Consult your local IT specialist for hardware advice as Saasu does not formally support this (though we always try to help).

Internet Connection

A standard ADSL, Broadband, or Wireless connection is sufficient to use Saasu. If you are sharing your connection with other people, allow for added bandwidth.

Stable IP Address

Saasu works best in a stable IP address environment. If IP addresses change a lot, we tend to log customers out for security reasons. This is for your protection, so request a static IP address from your ISP where possible.

PDF Creators/Writers

You may find a PDF creator quite useful if you want to save your reports in PDF format. You can find several free PDF creators out there by Googling for one.

After downloading and installing a PDF creator, run the report in Saasu that you want to save in PDF format. In the browser, select File > Print. Ensure the PDF creator you have installed is selected as the printer. When you click Print, the PDF writer will prompt you to specify a location to save the file > Select a location and click Save. Note that the output of the report may vary depending on the PDF creator you are using.

Old Technology Saasu no Longer Supports

At Saasu we have to find a constant balance between:

  • Supporting all the platforms out there
  • Working really well on 90-99% of platforms and making the most of those platforms for the majority of our users

It’s a classic greater good argument. We could spend a lot of time making it work on all platforms but often that means substantial cost and delays which ultimately need to be passed on to you, the subscriber.

So our policy is very clear. If a technology or platform meets these criteria it may not be supported:

  • Old technology (usually more than 3 years at a minimum) and /or
  • Unpopular technology that is used by less than 3% of our customers and/or
  • Where there is a migration trend away from technology that is sustained for more than 3 months and/or
  • Alternative technology upgrades are widely available and not dramatically difficult or expensive for the average customer

Consequently, we don’t support the small screens with a resolution of 800 x 600 less. If you have these, we suggest you upgrade. These were used by less than 1% of customers in Q4, 2007 (and the numbers were falling steadily). There is evidence to support the view that all four of the above criteria are being met. This means Saasu still works on these screens but users will experience some inconvenience such as horizontal scrolling on some screens. This is intended to maximise the experience for the other 97-99% of users.
